Plainwell overcomes Chiefs’ fast start to earn victory

For a moment at the beginning of each half, it appeared that the Dowagiac girls’ varsity basketball team was going to give Plainwell a bit of a tussle Tuesday night in their Wolverine Conference clash.

But the Trojans would have nothing to do with it.

The Chieftains (2-1, 2-1 Wolverine) jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Plainwell, but after back-to-back 3-pointers by Grace Howrigon, the game was all knotted.

The Trojans went on to take a 17-11 lead after the opening eight minutes of play and never looked back.

Dowagiac made one more run at Plainwell at the beginning of the third quarter, as Correshia Rodgers scored the first seven points of the second half to cut into Plainwell’s 36-22 advantage.

The Chieftains were able to keep the game around 10 points for the first six minutes of the third quarter, but a late run by the Trojans extended their advantage to 50-33 entering the final period.

Dowagiac would get no closer as Plainwell tightened up their defense and closed out the Chieftains.

Jennifer Lofts played her first game of the season for the Trojans and netted a game-high 24 points.

Plainwell also got 18 points and 11 assists from Howrigon.

Rodgers scored a career-high 19 points to lead the Chieftains offensively. Torie Lowe was held to just 11 points, while Marcie Ennesser also scored a career-high with eight points.
