Sports Fest gets under way

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - The Michigan All-Stars made a statement on Monday when it came to volleyball at Sports Fest.

Michigan pulled out a five-game victory over Indiana West at Bethel College to advance to Thursday's championship match against Indiana Metro.

Michigan defeated Indiana West 23-25, 25-19, 25-22, 23-25 and 15-9 to move to the title game at 7 p.m.

Edwardsburg's Stephanie Koontz had a big hand in helping Michigan defeat Indiana as she finished with 16 kills and four blocks.

Former Edwardsburg teammate Evie Tafunai was one of two players for Michigan with five kills. Chelsea Barrett also had five kills for the All-Stars.

Buchanan's Emily Ross finished with three aces, while Barrett added two aces.

Niles' Sam Brawley had a team-high nine digs. Ross finished with four digs and former River Valley standout Jodi Grandholm had three digs.

Indiana West was led by Brooke Blackford with nine kills. Kara Bailey and Kellie VanVoorhis had seven and six kills respectively.

VanVoorhis led the West with five aces, while Jenna Andrews had four aces and Ashley Pinkney three. Leslie Swihart had nine digs for the West All-Stars and Morgan Podkul eight.
