School board hiring DUHS band director

Monday, July 14, 2008 10:39 AM EDT

Dowagiac Board of Education's annual organizational meeting takes place at 7 p.m. today in the middle school cafeteria, 57072 Riverside Drive.

The school board president and other officers for 2008-2009 will be elected.

Mark Dobberstein and Stacy Leversen, elected in May to four-year terms that expire June 30, 2012, officially join the school board.

Personnel action items on the July 14 agenda include three new staff hires, DUHS Band Director CJ Brooks, Sister Lakes fifth grade teacher Shannon Hatch and Joseph Sylvester for Title I teacher at Patrick Hamilton; the retirements of Ester Stanley from Dowagiac Middle School and Dianne Shirrell from Justus Gage; and a family medical leave requested by Kincheloe first grade teacher Katrina Daiga.

Brooks was New Buffalo High School band and choir director the past two years. He has a bachelor's degree in music education from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

There will be a negotiations update given to the board in closed session.

The board is meeting in special session at 5:30 for an expulsion hearing for a Union High School freshman.
